Philadelphia HANCOCK
- Born: 1730
- Died: 1792
- Grave/memorial: XB 211
Was Jane Austen’s aunt. With her is buried the author’s cousin/sister-in-law, Elizabeth Austen, who died in 1813. It seems probable that Mrs Hancock came to Hampstead to consult doctors about her breast cancer; also that Jane Austen came to Hampstead to visit this grave, soon after Elizabeth’s death. The original, much worn inscription has been recut by the Jane Austen society in a shorter form.
