John KEATS

Commemorated in the church by a bust by Anne Whitney, presented in 1894 by American admirers. He first came to Hampstead about 1815, visiting Leigh Hunt in the Vale of Health to discuss the publicaiton of his first sonnets. After lodging with his brother Tom in Well Walk he lived at Wentworth Place, now called Keats House, 1818-20. During his time there, he was at the height of his poetical powers, notably in the Ode to a Nightingale.
