This autumn we will be having some conversations around Lauren J Winner’s book Still: notes on a mid-faith crisis. Lauren writes with sensitivity, wisdom and insight about her own spiritual journey at a difficult time in her life. She has written a number of books and teaches at Duke Divinity School in the USA, but her approach is more anecdotal than academic.
We are an open group, and we welcome new members. You don’t have to commit to come for all of the sessions as each one will stand on its own.
We meet on the following Monday evenings, at 8:00 p.m. in the crypt room for about an hour’s discussion followed by Compline: 21 September, 5 October, 19 October, 2 November, 16 November and 30 November.
Do come and join us if you would like to, or for more information contact Revd Diana Young ([email protected])
And one of the group writes…….
WHAT’S IN A NAME? Not what you think, perhaps.
Women’s Bible Study (WBS to the initiated) is a rather solemn name for a group of lively ladies who come together with Diana Young between 8 and 9pm every other Monday in the Crypt Room to discuss and explore any number of issues relating to women and Christianity.
This afternoon at our last meeting of the season over a cup of tea in Waterstone’s coffee shop (we have fun too) we agreed the title could usefully come under discussion as we feel it doesn’t quite reflect the variety of topics we explore nor the relaxed atmosphere in which we debate them. This year, for instance, we have enjoyed reading and discussing Kate Cooper’s historical “Band of Angels – the forgotten world of early Christian women”. Last year we had the privilege of welcoming Senior Rabbi Alexandra Wright from the Liberal Jewish Synagogue in St John’s Wood to speak at one of our sessions. We certainly find plenty of topics to think and talk about!
No session would be complete without the few minutes we spend at the end celebrating Compline – a candlelit service of music and prayers based on the liturgy used for centuries by monastic communities to end the day. They are moments we all cherish.
Do come and join us. Our next session will take place on the 21st September starting at 8pm in the Crypt Room. See you there.
