Treasure, riches etc.      Stephen Clarke

On Wednesday June 18th our Literary Hour consists of songs and readings on the theme “Treasure: riches in this world and the next”.  There are Spanish galleons laden with gold, pirates who want to steal it and a sea shanty from the California gold rush of 1849. Also FAQ on what it feels like to be born rich (courtesy Scott Fitzgerald,) what rich girls look for in a husband and – for those who prefer direct action – how to rob a bank. And let us not forget the treasures of heaven, where neither moth nor vermin destroy: a neurosurgeon visits heaven during a coma, sees its treasures and returns to write a book about them. And a fine ballad recalls how the socialist agitator Joe Hill is wrongfully executed, goes to heaven and comes back to advise workers on industrial relations. 1pm in church. Free but with a retiring collection.
