The Hampstead Christian Study Centre has been in existence for almost 40 years. During that time it has, of course, undergone changes. In the early years it was ambitious enough to hold several courses spread over two nights with a good supper and an act of worship before classes. Then we changed to one lecture a week, usually given by several speakers on a particular theme.
This has been the pattern for many years. It has not always been successful. I remember two occasions when we held a discussion in the group about the possibility of dying, but were urged to carry on. The ecumenical committee has tried to find themes which would be attractive and to find eminent speakers. A pattern has emerged of an Autumn Term devoted to social or ethical issues, a Spring Term of Bible Study and a Summer Term of a lighter nature, often literary or artistic. Last autumn we made a great effort to recruit younger people but have to confess failure.
The Committee has now decided to experiment by focusing on the faithful members who come regularly and rather than trying to find outside speakers to turn ourselves into that fashionable thing – a Reading Group. From September we shall suggest a book of theological interest, not too long or too heavy or too expensive, which we shall read and study together. We shall meet fortnightly and probably have three sessions on the book, more if the group wants it. There will be a subscription rather than the present weekly fee. We shall begin by meeting at our usual time and place, Wednesdays at 8pm at the Crypt Room at Hampstead Parish Church, but if the group wishes, we could change to a morning or afternoon time and a different venue. The Committee will suggest the first book but after that if there is a book which the group is interested in we will go for that. We plan to have one or two lectures either by the author of the book being studied or someone with expertise in the area. In summer we may study a novel or a play or a film. Please give this some thought and come if you can when we get the notices out.
I should also mention that we are sponsoring an Annual Donald Barnes Memorial Lecture to take place at St Peter’s, Belsize Park and I am pleased to announce the first lecture will be given by the Revd Lucy Winkett on Wednesday November 6th – subject to be announced.
