The Asra Hawariat School is a non-governmental, non-profit organization
established in 1958 to create a caring and stimulating environment for needy and
destitute children. At present the school provides free academic education, a
kindergarten, a child and family aid programme, a feeding centre for
malnourished children and various types of training in life-supporting skills. In
addition there is a vocational farm, which is used both for demonstration and
income generation purposes. The school is the life’s work of Asfaw Yimeru, who
has been called one of the most remarkable men in Africa today’ by the New
Internationalist magazine, and who was awarded the World Children’s Prize for
the Rights of the Child by Queen Sophia of Sweden in May 2001. Along with
their thanks for our annual donation, the trustees of the Asra Hawariat School
sent a copy of their report for the year 2006. If you would like to read more
about the school, ask Katherine for the report.
