Poem Barbara Alden

Just a Word or Two
In the beginning was a Grunt;
and the grunt grunted and behold! there came forth many grunts; which did grunt and groan and make much moan
and by that means did multiply;
and there was an exceeding great noise in their midst,
wherefore all was gathered in and, by and by, was begat
a mighty Big Bang;

And lo! and high above the heavens that bigness did boast the stirrings of Mystery, as bang begat bang with monotone momentum,
pulsating to penetrate this new body of sound;
for there was a mighty rumbling in their midst
which did cause much murmur; and murmur did metamorphose
into Melody;

And lo! and high above the heavens that melody was shrouded in mystery; and melody and mystery begat Song;
and the song sang and behold! it was very good;
and there was a mighty music in their midst,
which did chant such passion, resonant
of Higher Harmony;

And the chant chanted and it chanted a Word,
but which that word was, remained a mystery;
yet that same word became Thought and dwelt within;
and thought begat thought;
but lo! beneath the heavens, thought fought thought, and behold! it was very fraught;

And thought and word begat Deed;
and deed begat word and word begat thought;
and lo! the thought was but a seed in the mystery of Time; for behold! in time there sprang forth a Story and, indeed, it was very good;

And story begat story, from the beginning
thus sowing its seeds around their thoughts
about those deeds which came to pass;
and all from but a grunt and
just a word or two!
