May I take a line or two to say how very good it was to see so many friends on Sunday 30th April for my ninetieth? My thanks go out to everyone. Father Stephen spoke of my long years in Hampstead. It’s true that my husband and I came in 1940 to live in Gardnor Mansions, and from the window of the top flat we saw the fires in the docks on that first daylight raid in September. At that time life seemed a little uncertain. I certainly didn’t imagine that I should find myself at the age of ninety, again in Church Row, on a lovely morning in a peaceful place, surrounded by friends. And I didn’t know that I should be lucky enough to live to know Stephen and listen to him. As a writer, one of the best things used to a good review of my last book. But I have learnt now that a good review’ from Stephen means much more.
