Musical events in April -contributions from Handley Stevens and Jenny Macdonald Hay
Whilst we have to wait till May for the Hampstead and Highgate Festival, we have something like a mini-festival of our own this month, with three enticing musical events within a space of eight days.
First, on Saturday 16 April, we welcome the New Professionals in a concert which includes the Dvorak Cello concerto, some Brahms, and music from Leonard Bernstein’s musical masterpiece “On The Town” which is guaranteed to send you home smiling and about which jenny Macdonald Hay has more to say below.
Next, on Tuesday 19 April, Derek Spottiswoode, who was to have interviewed Dick Rubinstein, has himself agreed to be the castaway, and we look forward to hearing about his life and his choice of music. Tickets (£20) must be bought in advance, and numbers are strictly limited, so you are advised to lose no time in applying to the Events Secretary at 17 Mackeson Road, NW3 2LU.
Finally, on Sunday 24 April, following a buffet lunch, Jan-Filip Tupa (cello) and Ye Lin (piano) are offering us a lunch-time prom with works by Dvorak, Boccherini, Beethoven and Brahms. Friends of the Music may also wish to note that the two concerts arranged by Jonathan Beatty, which were to have taken place on 12 April and 3 May, have been postponed, probably until the autumn.
