Bach Solo Cello Suites Review
Suzanne Pinkerton
The audience at the Collective concert on 3rd April had a rather rare experience in that it wasn’t Collective at all. Several people remarked on how it was rare to encounter a solo cello concert, but so it was, with Jacob Garside, a stalwart of the Collective (and happy to be the “fixer” for the orchestra players at their concerts). Very tall and elegant, he and his cello, playing Bach suites, made a nice picture and a lovely warm sound. The fairly short programme was just enough at once, as the set of movements tends to be much the same. I think everybody enjoyed it and you can see why Jacob, who I already know at RAM, is getting work.
May I recommend Handel’s “Theodora” with orchestra including Leo Duarte, son of Annie, one of the leading Baroque oboists of his generation, to be performed in the church on 1st May. Tickets from Handel’s ‘Theodora’ Tickets, Mon 1 May 2023 at 18:00 | Eventbrite
