The lowest paid workers at the British Library will be getting a big pay rise thanks to the campaigners from St John’s Church and Camden Citizens.
In October 2015, I went with Andrea Werner from St Michael’s Camden to the British Library to do some snooping around the library. We spoke to a cleaner in the dramatic courtyard – he was getting £6.70 an hour.
We had a coffee by the amazing King’s Library – the waiter was also paid the minimum wage -£6.70.
So we wrote a letter to the Chief Executive saying that in the year when the British Library was the focus of the celebrations of Magna Carta and the struggle for human rights, it was wrong that the workers at the library were paid so badly that they would have no time to enjoy reading, studying- or even being with their families.
Hundreds of Camden Citizens signed our letter. Last month we heard the fantastic news that Sadiq Khan is going to announce the 2017 London Living Wage from the newest Living Wage Employer –the British Library.
The Next Campaign
Everton and Chelsea pay the Living Wage – why don’t Arsenal and Tottenham?
The group campaigning on the football clubs would like to talk to anyone working at the Emirates, White Hart Lane or Wembley. We want to hear their stories and tell them to some of the influential football supporters.
If you know anyone who works at the stadiums who would share their stories –please contact John Barker or Jan Rushton.
