Come and enjoy yourselves on the 15th February, the day following St. Valentine’s Day, for an evening of words and music on the theme “The Food of Love”, and give yourselves the additional satisfaction of supporting a good cause! This is an event promoted by The Hampstead Players, four of whom will be the readers, and The Saint Martin Singers, who will provide the music, in aid of Freedom from Torture.
The Hampstead Players will be well known to members of this church. The Saint Martin Singers owe their origin to a group of fire watchers at the church of St. Martin-in-the-Fields during the Second World War, who made music together on the quieter nights. They have since developed and continued as a well known and respected amateur choir. They now sing five or six times a year in and around London in aid of charity, giving their services on an entirely voluntary basis. Two of their number will be welcome back to this church, of which they are former members. Stephen Willmer sang for some years as a member of the boys’ choir under Martindale Sidwell. Alison Berryman performed with The Hampstead Players, of which she was Hon. Treasurer.
Freedom for Torture (FfT) is the only organization in the UK dedicated exclusively to providing care and treatment for survivors of torture. These are sometimes so traumatised that it can be many months or even years before they can talk about their experiences and begin the healing process. A huge amount of trained specialist treatment and counselling may be needed. This is inevitably costly, the more so as survivors are dispersed around this country under the asylum seeking process. There will be a voluntary retiring collection for those who would like to make a donation to Freedom from Torture.
Saturday, 15th February, 2014 at 7.30 pm at this church.
Tickets £10, (Concessions £8), available in the Crypt Room after the 10.30 eucharist or buy online at hampsteadplayers.org.uk.
