Who after a long illness, which he bore with incredible Patience, died as he had lived with the utmost Calmness and composure, the natural effect of a comfortable Review of his past life, and the near and joyful Prospect of a better’. Whig politician, appointed in 1727 as Surveyor of the Greenwax Money [a form of fine]. In 1743 he married Margaret Jones of Covent Garden, and they lived at Burgh House until 1758, when he became the 4th and last Lord Delamer. He then lived at Dunham Massey [Cheshire], where the National Trust guidebook says he was an ‘unattractive man, who planted most of the finest trees’.
