John CONSTABLE

  • Born: 1776
  • Died: 1837
  • Grave/memorial: XC 002

RA much-loved landscape painter from Suffolk, many of whose views of Hampstead can be seen at the Tate and V & A. He took summer lodgings in Hampstead for his family from 1819 at various addresses, included 2 Lower Terrace and 25 Downshire Hill. From 1827 he installed his family at 40 Well Walk [now plaqued] and stayed there until his death. His wife Maria died tragically young in 1828 and was the first to be buried in the graveyard ‘leaving 7 infant children to lament her loss, in common with their surviving parent’. The artist and all his children are buried with her, except the eldest son, John.
