Formerly an East India Commander, one of the Elder Brethren of Trinity House and many years a governor of the Hudson Bay Company. These employments he was eminently qualified for by his distinguished knowledge in naval affairs and commerce. The interests of the Company by his application and good conduct were recovered from a low and almost desperate condition to a surprising state of wealth and reputation.’ DNB says that Merry sailed in search of the North-West Passage and discovered and gave his name to Merry’s Island.
