How to…
For further information on any of our services, please select from the following options.
Electoral Roll
Every parish church has an electoral roll (the “Roll”). This is different from the civic electoral register.
Joining the Roll is an important statement of witness and a step along the path of discipleship.
Joining the Roll is compulsory if you wish to stand for election to the PCC or other synodical council (such as the Deanery, Diocesan or General Synod) or vote at the Annual Parochial Church Meeting of our church.
Representation on the governing bodies of the Church depends on the number on the Roll.
Under the Church Representation Rules any person is entitled to have their name entered on the Roll if they:
(i) are sixteen or over; and
(ii) are baptised; and
(iii) have made one of the following three declarations on the electoral roll application form (‘Form’), namely that they are:
• a member of the Church of England or of a Church in communion with it and are resident in the parish; or
• a member of the Church of England or of a Church in communion with it but, not being resident in the parish, have habitually attended public worship in the parish during the preceding six months; or
• a member in good standing of a Church which is not in communion with the Church of England but subscribes to the doctrine of the Holy Trinity; and
(iv) have submitted a completed, signed, Form.
A list of the Churches which are in communion with the Church of England can be found on the HPC website via this link as can a map showing the parish boundary via this link.
If you are not resident in the parish but were a habitual worshipper in the parish and have been prevented by sickness or absence or other essential reason from worshipping for the past six months, you may write ‘would’ before ‘have habitually attended’ on the electoral roll application form and add ‘but was prevented from doing so because’ and then state the reason.
You can be on the Roll of more than one church, but you can only serve on the PCC of one church at a time.
Baptism
A baptism, also called a christening, is the visible beginning of the life of faith. It is a sign of God’s love in which God draws people into relationship with both God and the family of the church.
People can be baptised at any age. We will baptise anyone who lives within the parish boundaries, whether you regularly attend church or not. We would encourage you to come along to our services to get to know the family into which you or your child is being baptised. If you live outside the parish please still make contact with us. You can find out which parish you live in by using this street finder. If you live outside the parish we would seek the good will of the church where you live.
Baptisms can take place on Sundays during our 10:30 Parish Eucharist, or in a separate service on Sunday afternoons. More information about baptism can be found here. The Church of England also has an excellent site with information about baptism.
If you are interested in having your child baptised, please contact the Parish Office via email or talk to the Vicar after a service. You will need to give your name and address, the name of your child and contact details.

Funeral
Organising a funeral can be overwhelming and making plans at such a time can be very difficult. We will be pleased to walk alongside you as you plan a service which will honour your loved one. You should choose a funeral director who will oversee the arrangements for you and guide you through the process. They will contact one of the clergy about taking the service and we will contact you to arrange a time to visit.
Funeral services can take place in church, or the whole service can happen at a crematorium or cemetery chapel. We can assist with choices of music and readings, and will offer pastoral care and prayer through the whole process.
The Church of England’s website has additional information and resources for you.
If you would like to discuss a funeral please email us.

Wedding
The Church teaches that marriage is a special sign of the love and faithfulness that God has for each one of us. So we are delighted that you would like to make your marriage vows before God in a Church of England service. More details about the content of this service are available on the Church of England website.
There are certain rules surrounding eligibility to marry within a particular parish church. You are entitled to have your wedding at St John-at-Hampstead if you live within our parish or currently attend worship regularly. You can find out which parish you live in by using this street finder.
There are further criteria that mean it is possible to marry here if you have another qualifying connection.
You may get married at St John-at-Hampstead if you:
- were baptised or confirmed here
- have lived within the parish at any time for at least 6 months
- have habitually attended worship here at any time for at least 6 months
or if one of your parents, at any point during your life:
- has lived in the parish at any time for at least 6 months; or
- has habitually attended worship here for at least 6 months
or if one of your parents or grandparents was married here.
If you fall in to one of these categories, we can proceed with plans for your wedding.
The best way forward is for you to attend one of our services and introduce yourself to the clergy at the end. Alternatively, you can contact the Parish Office.

Confirmation
Confirmation is a way for people to confirm, in their own voice, the promises made in baptism. It also marks becoming a member of the Church of England if you come from certain other denominations. We offer confirmation to young people of senior school age, and to adults of any age.
If you would like to explore being confirmed, please contact one of the clergy, or email

Admission to Communion
Children are fellow travellers on the way of faith, and Christian disciples are nourished by Holy Communion. Each year we prepare young children who worship regularly to receive Holy Communion. This is often around the age of seven, but there is no minimum age.
If you would like to explore admission to Communion please contact one of the clergy, or email
